Interview by SafetyDetectives.com

SafetyDetectives recently sat down with Christian Wind, co-founder of SEEDOR, a company committed to providing secure recovery seed storage solutions for cryptocurrency users. With a strong background in mechanical engineering and materials science, Christian identified critical gaps in the existing market for recovery seed backups. Instead of settling for subpar options, he and his co-founder Ayhan developed a solution that prioritizes both security and user-friendliness. Today, SEEDOR stands as a leading name in Bitcoin recovery backup solutions, combining physical durability with intuitive design to offer peace of mind for seasoned users and non-technical heirs alike.

What inspired you to create SEEDOR, and how does it address the need for secure recovery seed storage?

My background in mechanical engineering and materials science made me aware of the vulnerabilities in many of the existing recovery seed backup products. During my research, I reviewed 74 competitors but found every one of them lacking in some way. This dissatisfaction led Ayhan and me to develop SEEDOR—a solution built to fill these gaps for ourselves and others in the Bitcoin community.

Four years later, SEEDOR has grown into a trusted name in Bitcoin recovery storage. Our mission is to deliver practical, innovative solutions that ensure Bitcoin holders have peace of mind and easy access to their funds, even during emergencies.

How does the design of the SEEDOR Safe prioritize physical durability and usability?

The SEEDOR Safe was specifically created with heirs and non-technical users in mind. It offers enough space to record not only full-length seed phrases but also additional critical recovery details, such as derivation paths, multisig configurations, and other vital instructions.

Our focus is on simplifying the recovery process while maintaining the highest standards of security. We want to ensure that heirs never find themselves scrambling to Reddit or Twitter for advice on how to recover funds due to incomplete or confusing backups. The SEEDOR Safe is intuitive and straightforward, even for users with no technical expertise.

What are the most common mistakes you see in how people manage their recovery seeds?

One of the biggest issues is overcomplicating setups or creating custom encryption schemes. While these efforts are meant to increase security, they often backfire, leaving users unable to access their own funds.

At SEEDOR, we designed our solution to avoid these pitfalls. The SEEDOR Safe incorporates redundancy, ensuring that even if some information is lost, recovery remains possible. My advice is simple: unless you're Pieter Wuille, don’t try to invent your own cryptography. Stick to straightforward, well-tested methods and make redundancy a key part of your strategy.

How does SEEDOR protect recovery seeds from threats like fire and tampering?

Our products are crafted using the highest-grade 1.4404 stainless steel. The addition of molybdenum ensures excellent resistance to corrosion, while the low carbon content allows it to withstand extreme temperatures, including house fires. The compact, robust design is nearly impossible to crush or destroy.

For added protection, we provide tamper-evident seals that make it clear if the safe has been accessed. This feature is especially helpful for storing backups in multisig setups, Shamir shards, or time-locked configurations like those used in Liana. By inspecting the seals, users can verify that their backup remains untouched, ensuring secure recovery.

What trends in hardware security or user behavior are shaping the future of recovery seed storage?

One of the most promising innovations is the growing adoption of Bitcoin Miniscript wallets. Miniscript is a subset of Bitcoin Script that enables highly flexible wallet setups. For example, you could create a 2-of-3 multisig wallet that transitions to a simpler 1-of-3 or even a single-signature wallet after a period of inactivity.

This approach ensures that even if disaster strikes and two keys are lost, your funds remain recoverable. By periodically spending funds within a set timeframe (e.g., every 15 months), the time lock resets, extending the wallet's security seamlessly.

These advancements allow users to design more strategic backups. For instance, a steel backup stored with a trusted family member or friend could become a failsafe in case of prolonged inactivity. This system ensures privacy and robust access control while maintaining a secure fallback plan.

What advice would you give to those looking to enhance their overall cryptocurrency security?

For substantial Bitcoin holdings, I strongly recommend using multisignature (multisig) setups. Multisig reduces single points of failure and protects against risks such as low-entropy keys, device theft, or even targeted attacks like the "evil maid" scenario. Tools like Sparrow Wallet, Bitcoin Safe, and Liana make collaborative custody and multisig more accessible than ever.

Additionally, users should design their security systems with future growth in mind. Plan as though your Bitcoin is already 10 times more valuable than it is today. This mindset ensures that your security setup will remain robust over time.

For those seeking extra protection, services like Bitsurance offer insurance for self-custodied Bitcoin. These policies cover risks such as theft, extortion, or physical attacks, providing a further layer of confidence for serious Bitcoin holders.

SEEDOR’s commitment to simplifying and securing recovery seed storage is helping the Bitcoin community safeguard their wealth for the future. With innovative design, robust materials, and a focus on usability, SEEDOR ensures that recovery is as straightforward and stress-free as possible—even in the most challenging circumstances.
